Social Penetration Theory Of Interpersonal Relationships
The social penetration theory and cost-benefit theory are applicable to most interpersonal relationships and valuable to the field of communication studies. While they are simple in concept, analyzing the way a relationship functions according to these theories is intriguing in its own right. Both theories describe interpersonal communication tendencies in a variety of settings. In the case of one of my own relationships, the social penetration theory and cost-benefit theory help explain how the relationship developed and why it did not survive the transition to college. The social penetration theory describes how relationships vary over time and explains the varying strengths of interpersonal relationships. This theory, developed byâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦However, when relationships wane, the amount one is willing to self-disclose diminishes. On the other hand, the communication privacy management theory, or the ââ¬Å"establishment of boundaries and borders that [one] decide [s] others may or may not crossâ⬠is intrinsically linked to the social penetration theory (p. 179). Privacy describes the limits one places on what they will self-disclose to others. When people decides to self-disclose, they ââ¬Å"compute a ââ¬Ëmental calculusâ⬠to gauge the trustworthiness and risks of self-disclosure, and then they choose accordingly (p. 179). However, boundary turbulence can occur when the members of a relationship cannot decide on what information should remain confidential. This tension can dissolve a relationship. If the trust of the self-discloser is violated, then they are less likely to disclose again. If a member of a relationship is not willing to self-disclose, then relationship termination is probable. Where breadth and depth influence the impact and value of a relationship, self-disclosure and privacy needs impact a relationshipââ¬â¢s breadth and depth (Gamble Gamble, 2013). The cost-benefit theory, also known as the social exchange theory, describes the viability of relationships in terms of gain and loss. I Ate a Toy Truck free essay sample
Heââ¬â¢s still there. I have had someone following me for ten years. Every time I look over my shoulder, he isnââ¬â¢t far behind. The more I learn more about him, the scarier he looks and the more uncomfortable I feel around him. As I age, he ages, too. I can see the maturity in his face. Is it maturity? No, itââ¬â¢s that fake kind where the person tries to convince you they are mature by getting piercings and tattoos. He wreaks of cigarette smoke and dirty laundry. He always wears a snarl on his face that makes me want to not even look at him. If I do, I just sneak small peeks so I can try to describe him to a trusted friend. I wouldnââ¬â¢t want him following someone else, so I try to keep the details I see to myself. However, beneath this rough, intimidating, and repulsive outward appearance, he still has a piece of innocence in him. We will write a custom essay sample on I Ate a Toy Truck or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Over the ten years, I have actually been trying to find a small piece of innocence that coincidentally left me at the same time that I first felt his presence. The memory is a bit foggy, but I can still remember the first time I saw him. I was at my auntââ¬â¢s apartment because I had the day off from school, and my parents both had work. I was engrossed in a book while the chatter of cable TV passed over me. My aunt was either cleaning her bedroom, taking a shower, or doing laundry; I was always a good kid, so she didnââ¬â¢t have to worry about me getting into trouble. My cousins are Irish twins, both roughly five years older than I am. To my knowledge, they were playing with G.I. Joeââ¬â¢s in their bedroom. I much preferred reading my books over playing with their ââ¬Å"boyâ⬠toys. I was in the middle of a chapter when I heard one of them call me into their room. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢re gonna play a game.â⬠Ooh, a game! ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢ll go into the closet, close your eyes, and open your mouth. Then, weââ¬â¢ll put something in it.â⬠Maybe itââ¬â¢ll be a toy truck? I love to guess, and my naive, simple second-grader mindââ¬â¢s first thought was a toy truck. I did what I was told and stepped into the darkness. One last rule to the game was given to me before the door shut: ââ¬Å"Oh, and donââ¬â¢t bite down!â⬠I donââ¬â¢t know exactly how long I stood in there. Long enough for me to question how fun this game actually was. Of course, something had been in my mouth the entire time, but I didnââ¬â¢t know what it was. I did know, however, that it was definitely not the hard plastic of a toy truck. This is where the fog is heaviestââ¬âI canââ¬â¢t remember what exactly made me freak out and run out of the closet. But as I did, I heard the laughter of two thirteen-year-old boys. I ran to the bathroom and gathered water into my mouth like I hadnââ¬â¢t tasted it in years. As I finished rinsing out my mouth, I looked into the mirror, and thatââ¬â¢s when I first saw him. He wasnââ¬â¢t as scary then as he is now. He looked like a man who knew success in his life, but he was just a little dirty. His hair was a little tousled, and he looked like he could use a coffee. His face wasnââ¬â¢t mean, but still had some authority to it. He followed me around for the rest of the day, b ut when I woke up the next morning he was gone. And so was this memory. It was several years until I saw him again. I was walking with my friends from the playground to the school building at the end of recess. We were almost to the door when I caught him from the corner of my eye. I jumped when I first saw him, but I couldnââ¬â¢t place where I knew him from. He was so familiar to me, but where had I seen him before? Soon, the foggy pieces of the memory started coming together, and the first piece was the reflection of him in the mirror. Because I was not exposed to a lot of popular culture and was not a rebellious childââ¬âand because I was a childââ¬âit took a decade to fully understand why this man was following me. After the flashback in fifth grade, I knew something wrong was done to me, but I didnââ¬â¢t understand the magnitude of it until my junior year of high school. It wasnââ¬â¢t until today, the middle of my second semester of my first year in college, that I started demanding answers from the man who has been following me for a decade. I balled up the courage to look him directly in the eyes and express my distresses and confusion. Why are you still here? Why can I not look at you? Why do you make me so uncomfortable? why? Why? WHY? No one in my family knows about what happened ten years ago, so life has gone on normally. Whenever we had family gatherings, big or small, the man seemed to get a little closer to me. The older cousin has become known as someone who is kind and helps out our family when he can. Because I see this goodness in him, too, I coped with the memory by telling myself that what they did was something stupid thirteen-year-old boys do. They didnââ¬â¢t know better and were just playing a joke. There are people who believe that ââ¬Å"boys will be boys,â⬠and we should just accept their vile behavior and move on. T hey believe we can not change the nature of male behavior. However, I donââ¬â¢t believe in the idea that ââ¬Å"boys will be boys,â⬠so am I contradicting myself? I understand both sides because I have lived both sides. I have seen my cousin grow into a nice, young man. It is possible to come back from a mistake, and people make plenty of mistakes. I love my cousin, and I can forgive him his stupid action. However, that doesnââ¬â¢t mean I am taking the wrongness and violation away from what happened. When you say that ââ¬Å"boys will be boys,â⬠you take away their accountability. This brings shame, guilt, and embarrassment to the victim when it wasnââ¬â¢t their mistake. This way of thinking takes away the fact that we are all human and we all make mistakes, but there are still consequences for those mistakes. I grew up in a time where such behavior was not a common topic of discussion. Only recently have sexual assault and rape started to be brought into light in a mainstream way. When trying to process my experience, I had no way of knowing that what happened to me was not my fault. I felt embarrassed and ashamed for a long time. When I started learning about sexual assault in high school, it generated strong feelings towards the accountability of perpetrators; but I still did not give myself the permission to absolve myself of the consequences. At that point, I had already distanced myself from what happened. But the distance didnââ¬â¢t rid me of the ramifications the experience had on me. There are many women, girls, men, and boys who do as I did. They try to shove the experience into the farthest corner and lock it up because they are ashamed of it and donââ¬â¢t want to think about it. We shouldnââ¬â¢t live in a world where people who did not consent to these experiences fee l the need to lock away the memory and pretend it doesnââ¬â¢t exist because they donââ¬â¢t think they can be helped. Of course, they will still be affected by these experiences, but they should not hold the burden of someone elseââ¬â¢s consequences. We can not pretend that we do not see the man following us. Not acknowledging that he is there makes him grow scarier and more powerful. However, putting accountability to the reason why I first met him has seemed to release that innocence that was hidden in him. It radiated out and it seems to have allowed him to become humble. The man that has been following me now looks like he is cleaning himself up. His face is starting to relax into what Iââ¬â¢m tempted to call a pleasant look. Heââ¬â¢s started taking some piercings out, and I think he even got a haircut. Weââ¬â¢re not friends, and we never will be. But I do acknowledge him with a little nod now and then.

Through the Tunnel free essay sample
Response to literature essay The satisfaction for ones self? Or the satisfaction of others recognizing? The short story ââ¬Å"Through the Tunnelâ⬠, written by Dorris Lessing, tells us about a boy named Jerry who craves the satisfaction of acceptance. Although, he realizes his self-satisfaction is enough praise. Lessingââ¬â¢s purpose for writing this story is for readers to understand that sometimes you donââ¬â¢t need to have other recognize your achievements to feel good. That the internal feeling of triumph should be enough for you to feel like you have reached your goal. For example, Jerry, the main character first wants to be like the other boys swimming in the bay, he wants to be able to hang out with them. He soon finds out that all of the boys were swimming through a tunnel in a rock under the water. Jerry thinks that if he can pass through the tunnel, that the boys will accept him as ââ¬Å"one of their ownâ⬠. We will write a custom essay sample on Through the Tunnel or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Eventually after passing through the tunnel, Jerry no longer wants to be accepted by the boys, he felt as if his self-accomplishment of passing through that tunnel, was more than enough. We learn that Jerry is very persistent; he set his mind to passing through that tunnel, and didnââ¬â¢t stop trying until he did it. From the time Jerry entered, to the time Jerry exited the tunnel, his thought process changed, no longer did he crave for the boys acceptance. It became a self-goal for Jerry. To apply a simple theme such as, your own self-triumph is all that should matter when completing something important to you, to life, is simple. People crave the approval of others to recognize their glory. When really it is as simple as just setting a goal for you, and completing it, then feeling confident enough not to tell anyone. Just the internal feeling of accomplishment is enough for you to be satisfied. Jerry wanted so badly for the boys to accept him as one of their own. After he completes his goal, he realizes that he does not want that anymore. Lessing reveals her message to the readers through that. With Lessingââ¬â¢s imagery, it gives you a very good idea of what was going on with Jerry physically and emotionally, or mentally. When Jerry first enters the tunnel, Lessing makes it seem as if this will be such an easy task for Jerry, like he will be in and out of the tunnel as the other boys had. The more Jerry swam through the tunnel, the more Lessingââ¬â¢s imagery gave you the impression that Jerry would not make it out of the tunnel.

Our company is continuously seeking to hire the best possible employees and provide opportunity to develop their potentials. In the meanwhile, we are committed to maintain a safe work environment for all those employed. The following specific tasks will further explain how the company attempt to complete the accomplished mission. Firstly of all, a comprehensive research is the primary step for the ABC Bakery Company. The external environment plays a vital role at the first stage. For example, populations of the particular area, peopleââ¬â¢s preferences of bread taste and the competitor around those areas. The business should be adaptive and innovative among the intense competitors. In addition, production design and custom service is another important task. Environmental friendly structure design which concentrate on investigating ways to reduce plastic conten t and trial more sustainable materials within our bakeries. The following ABC Bakery company chart 1 will illustrate a specific task for each department which is responsible for a certain outcome. At the first stage, there are 5 department of the company. The Accounting department is responsible for the total quality of outputs and inputs and providing the accurate number of gains and loss. The marketing manager is in charge to make sure the companyââ¬â¢s advertising and the recent tend of the bakery field. Besides this, HR is taken charge to attract the most talents to work for the company. Additionally, the responsibility of sales and operation department is to providing the possible highest quality services and goods to meet the customersââ¬â¢ needs. After three years operation, our company has been quite successful. As a result, I would like to open up the second bakery shop where is located just a few miles away from the current one. Because of the location advantage, the c ompany is utilising the cost-effective strategy and acquire the economic of scale to reduce the possible cost. It is a quite vertical structure design for efficiency and centralised authority. For instance, the second location is responsible for providing the final goods for customers. The first location is in charge for all the producing process and also responsible for sales. The two companies sharing the equipments to manufacturing the goods that is definitely bring efficiency. However, it still has problems. The company structure design for efficiency is operating well, but this would prevent the company from innovation. It is widely accepted that the external environment is change rapidly and competition of bakery industry is quite strong (Stahi Grigsby, 2007). The customer is seems like to seek more various favours of the bakery products. The performance of the second location is going down after opening for a period of time. The goods quality is still maintain quite well but the company can not meets the changing needs of customers. Moreover, the second locations employees have rarely communication with the other staff of the first shop. When the company undergone a poor performance, the employees form different locations start to complain with each other. As a result, the employeesââ¬â¢ performance declines as well. For the sake of satisfy both the customers and employees needs, the company decided to purchase brand new equipment for the second location and change the vertical organisation structure to a more flexible one and more concentrate on learning. Additionally, the employees are at a change routine process. All the staff requite work to different locations depended on the working shift. It would assist employees get along well with each other from different locations. The business has grown to five locations in two cities in five more years. Different locations have influenced the structure formalisation and the external environment uncertaint y would be another changeling for the company. In order to maintain a good control and coordination with the different branch, the company applied a quite flexible management coordination structure but a relatively centralised operational decision making structure. However, the different location across two cities may have quite dissimilar taste of customers. The five branches should preserve a high quality of the goods and service to the customers and in the mean while offering more various or new products due to the local preference. On the other hand, each branch should have its own supply channel to achieve efficiency. Based on the Woodward Classification of System Production theory, the company would apply the small batch and unit policy which focus on customised products (Daft, 2009).Moreover, it applies a flexible manufacturing technology which aligned the structure with technologies. The advanced production equipment might be used to improve the efficiency. The business has e xpanded into five states with seventy-five locations 20 years later. The extent market brings profits but also changelings. Obviously, the totally different culture of the 5 states requires the business must obtain a quite flexible structure to be adapted with the local culture. The different language, people preferences are the main problems for the business. The bigger size equals more complexity. The organisation must do a quite lot of research of the local culture and the competitors around the new environment. On the other hand, maintaining an accurate and frequent feedback of each state performance is another challenge. Due to the long distance of the business location, the communication of each location seems like quite difficult. However, in order to keep in touch with the each business, the company sets up roles that every month each locationââ¬â¢s supervisor should provide a detailed report about the company performance to the head office supervisor. In this way, every l ocation is maintaining a touch with the performance. On the other hand, the head office might send people to supervise different locations performance and recall them back to give a report about the sales performance of each location. The customer satisfaction is about everything. The mission of the bakery company is to provide the possible highest quality to satisfy customerââ¬â¢s needs. In order to obtain a quite rapidly feedback from customers, every location should open up a formal customer service department which aims to concentrate on customersââ¬â¢ satisfactions or any positive suggestions and negative feedback for the company further development. In addition, the ABC Bakery implemented a 360 degree feedback information flow among each company. The strategy is focused on a quite flat and open system and every one in the company is equal and should contribute their efforts to improve the company performance. Culture is representing a companyââ¬â¢s soul. Although the bu siness is expanded to 5 states but the head office of the ABC bakery culture must remain the same. Each state president must deliver the main office culture value so that solidify the whole organisationââ¬â¢s spirit. Due to the culture different in each state, various products may cater to different locations. But one thing is not change is the companyââ¬â¢s culture. Providing the possible highest quality to the customers and in the meanwhile satisfy our employees in the most content. Social responsibility is other significant element to maintain the organisation has a healthy development (Hanson, 2008). Environmental friendly strategy must keep in mind of the company. Our bakery company are striving to establish the most effective way to recycle. Take for an example, our company working with local suppliers, local government and local councils. Moreover, our company are investigating measures to reduce content and trail more sustainable materials within our bakeries. On the oth er hand, our company constantly ensure to reduce excess packing and refine our packaging to be more environmental friendly. To sum up, there is no denying that ABC Bakery is operating quite successfully during these periods. Our mission is to value and satisfy the external customers and internal employees. As the company experienced an expansion to the markets, it has undergone certain challenging and issues. Opportunity is coupled with risks.Additionally, the company alter its structure due to the external environment change and implement the different strategy as a result of its structure change. Efficiency or effectiveness is the primary concern and simultaneously maintain a flexible coordination strategy is another essential element for success between the various business locations. On the other hand, a deep culture understanding plays a crucial role though out the whole organisation management. The strategy implementation should be aim at environmental friendly which would ass ist the company obtain a sustainable development.

Corporate Development During the Industrial Revolu Essays
Corporate Development During the Industrial Revolu Essays Corporate Development During the Industrial Revolution The Standard Oil Company founded by John D. Rockefeller and the U.S. Steel Company founded by Andrew Carnegie. The Standard Oil Company and U.S. Steel Company were made successful in different ways due to the actions of their different owners. The companies differed in their labor relations, market control, and structural organization. In the steel industry, Carnegie developed a system known as vertical integration. This means that he cut out the middle man. Carnegie bought his own iron and coal mines because using independent companies cost too much and were inefficient. By doing this he was able to undersell his competetors because they had to pay the competitors they went through to get the raw materials. Unlike Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller integrated his oil business from top to bottom, his distinctive innovation in movement of American industry was horizontal. This meant he followed one product through all its stages. For example, rockrfeller controlled the oil when it was drilled, through the refining stage, and he maintained control over the refining process turning it into gasoline. Although these two powerful men used two different methods of management their businesses were still very successful (Conlin, 425-426). Tycoons like Andrew Carnegie, "the steel king," and John D. Rockefeller, "the oil baron," exercised their genius in devising ways to circument competition. Although, Carnegie inclined to be tough-fisted in business, he was not a monopolist and disliked monopolistic trusts. John D. Rockefeller came to dominate the oil industry. With one upward stride after another he organized the Standard Oil Company, which was the nucleus of the great trust that was formed. Rockefeller showed little mercy. He believed primitive savagery prevailed in the jungle world of business, where only the fittest survived. He persued the policy of "ruin or rule." Rockefeller's oil monopoly did turn out a superior product at a relatively cheap price. Rockefeller belived in ruthless business, Carnegie didn't, yet they both had the most successful companies in their industries. (The American Pageant, pages 515-518) Rockefeller treated his customers in the same manner that Andrew Carnegie treated his workers: cruel and harsh. The Standard Oil Company desperately wanted every possible company to buy their products. Standard Oil used ruthless tactics when Rockefeller threatenedto start his own chain of grocery stores and put local merchants out of business if they did not buy oil from Standard Oil Company. Carnegie dealt with his workers with the same cold lack of diplomacy and consideration. Carnegie would encourage an unfriendly competition between two of his workers and he goaded them into outdoing one another. Some of his employees found working under Carnegie unbearable. These rivalries became so important to the employees that somedidn't talk to each other for years (McCloskkey, page 145). Although both Carnegie and Rockefeller created extermely successsful companies, they both used unscrupulous methods in some aspect of their corporation building to get to the top. The success of the Standard Oil Company and U.S. Steel company was credited to the fact that their owners ran them with great authority. In this very competetive time period, many new businesses were being formed and it took talented businessmen to get ahead and keep the companies running and make the fortunes that were made during this period. Journal - Coursework Example The difference presented by this methodology compared with other teaching styles is that topics for study are selected because they are of interest to the children and their lives. These interests are supposed to exhibit meaningful relevance to the greater benefit of childrenââ¬â¢s lives. In this education curriculum, children go to great depths and higher levels in which teachers integrate content knowledge like reading, science and mathematics into these projects. This paper aims to highlight emergent curriculum by discussing topics that appear to interest children in a given class. In emergent curriculum formulation and implementation, development appropriate projects (DAP) should always be a primary consideration when planning to embark on designing a project. This ensures that the intended activity meets the overall objectives set out by the institution of learning and addresses the childrenââ¬â¢s immediate goals of learning through their experiences in the project (Carter & Curtis 203) DAP is achieved by ensuring that the intended project does not require too little or too much of the children in that it negates their efforts in attaining knowledge from the activity. In this case, similarity or monotony presented by indoor play areas can seem to be depressing or discouraging to teachers a scenario, I was able to find myself in during my time with the children. I came to notice that the children under my care did not get bored for being in the same play environment every day; the children illustrated progressive advancement in their daily activities in th e same setting. As a teacher, I am supposed to apply my knowledge on theoretical influences behind this observation made on the children in this static environment (Carter & Curtis 92). As outlined by Carter & Curtis, As a teacher and caregiver, I am supposed to claim my power as a principle to focus my attention on
